Round 1

We meet Alexander Skarsgård at the sweet spot in his career, when he is morphing into a movie star. To commemorate the change, M set him up at Fortune Gym, on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, to re-create the sweaty Hollywood glamour of "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (starring Paul Newman, 1956), or "Champion" (Kirk Douglas, 1949), or maybe "Kid Galahad" (Edward G. Robinson, 1937). At left is former heavyweight professional and current gym proprietor Justin Fortune, who fought Lennox Lewis back in '95. "I was six-two when I went in the ring," Fortune says, just before working with Skarsgård. "Now I'm five-foot-nine."

Skarsgård wears a T by Alexander Wang cotton tank top, Lifetime Collective cotton sweatpants and Army Navy store dog tags.

Round 4

When gym proprietor Justin Fortune saw Skarsgård lying on the canvas, he said, "Don't get used to that fuckin' position, all right?" The actor lifted his head and laughed. He has been down before. Roughly 10 years ago, he found himself auditioning for stupid parts. Then he saw something he wanted—the role of U.S. Marine Sgt. Brad "Iceman" Colbert in the HBO miniseries "Generation Kill," which was co-produced by "The Wire"'s David Simon and Ed Burns. "I got lucky," Skarsgård says. "I got the part."

The Shapes Of Hydrogen

2012

I wrote a program to plot the volumes in which electrons can be found in a hydrogen atom, according to the laws of quantum mechanics [shown in upper right].

Brighter areas represent higher probability of the electron being there. These volumes are the orbitals or electron shells of the atom, which have beautiful shapes in the form of spherical harmonics.

  • (n, l, m) are the quantum numbers of the orbitals,
  • where n is the principal number associated with its order and energy,
  • while l and m are associated with angular momentum and spin of the electron.

The number n=1,2,3,4,5… is the number of the electron shell in Bohr's old model of the atom.

New - Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - Pentecoastal

This album caught me by surprise as I don't follow music news that closely because I'm a horribly irresponsible music blogger. You would think that I would keep a close eye on things AT THE VERY LEAST for top-of-the-heap favorites of mine like Mr. Lanegan, but no…

I don't know why I'm so ambushed by this, as it's been over a year since Blues Funeral, and there's typically a new record centered around Lanegan's vocals (which is to say the new QOTSA doesn't count) every year or so. I'm not going to list them here because I want to get to this record at some point in the next month and a half.

This album teams Lanegan up with English multi-instrumentalist with with the most English multi-instrumentalist name ever, Duke Garwood. Garwood and Lanegan have a tremendous mutual respect, and have been called spiritual brothers, which is why I'm surprised that I got through this whole album without my soul being sucked into the machine.

This recording sounds like it came together quickly. Which is not to say it sounds rushed. Rather, it has the distinct feel of sitting in a dimly lit, perhaps slightly musky bar. A couple haggard gentlemen walk in, and head over to a corner where a pile of instruments sit, covered with a thin layer of dust. For the next hour, the two play and sing with the experience of a century of troubadours. one sitting on a stool, singing, barely taking his eyes off the floor. The other remains comfortably in a chair, rotating through the instruments at his will. This record is what you got from the digital recorder you had sitting at your table for some reason. Nice work.

It takes something of a trip back to Lanegan's very earliest solo work, in the nineties. It's a much more appropriate sound for a man approaching his fifties than one who was just nearing his thirtieth year. Giving the setting I described above, if you're remotely familiar with Lanegan's work, you know it suits him well. ("Siri, look up references to 'Mark Lanegan' and 'whiskey-soaked'" "'You have 8,945,492,019 results".)

I'm finally seeing comparisons to Lanegan and the other legendary journeymen who came before him, Waits, Cohen, etc. And he's a more than worthy heir. And the truth is, from his rock and roll beginnings with the Screaming Trees on, he's probably had a more diverse background than his predecessors. But there's something about a record that sounds like him just singing in a dark bar that fits his ambiance best. (Though I would kill for some new Trees material.). - MO

All of this.  Best voice in rock music, hands down.
